King Charles may delay his transfer to Buckingham Palace. A source told The Sunday Times (via Cosmopolitan UK) that Charles is “no fan of ‘the big house,’ as he calls the Palace. He doesn’t see it as a viable future home or a house that’s fit for purpose in the modern world. He feels that its upkeep, both financially and environmentally, is not sustainable.”
When’s he moving? No way. Charles won’t move in until a £369 million renovation is complete. A Buckingham Palace source speculated that the royals will move in 2027. In the meanwhile, the Palace will be used for official business.
Another insider said Camilla “doesn’t want to reside at Buckingham Palace” and she and Charles are still at Clarence House. “Charles wants to invite people in to interact with the institution. He knows it needs to keep developing, and in the modern period people want to be able to access their Palaces. He loves that and views them as public locations more than private spaces,” a Sunday Times insider said.
Sources previously told the Daily Mail that Charles avoided Buckingham Palace. One of Charles’ friends said, “Despite what everyone thinks about him not wishing to live there, he will have housing there—but it will be a lot more modest flat above the shop akin to that of the prime minister at Downing Street.” The Prince and Duchess of Cornwall are quite practical and know the queen must reside at Buckingham Castle or it would become like Hampton Court, a tourist attraction rather than a working royal palace.
