HISTORY
In Lumbini, a town close to the Indian border, Siddartha Gautama, the Buddha, was born in 563 B.C. Nepal was a significant South Asian power in the 1800s. In 1816, Nepal was forced to sign treaties ceding land to Britain by the British, who at the time-controlled India. The treaty was signed by Nepal, but until 1951, their borders were closed to outsiders.
In honour of British surveyor Sir George Everest, the mountain that is known to westerners as Mount Everest was given that name in 1863. Chomolungma, which means “Goddess Mother of the World,” is how the local Sherpa refer to it. The name in Chinese is Qomolangma. Everest’s Nepali name, Sagarmatha, translates to “Forehead of the Sky.”
